History
The Wayne County Sheriff Employee Local 502 was founded in 1960 by Graten Little Jr. It became one of Michigan’s largest unions and was based out of Livonia, MI. Its members comprised of Wayne County police officers and, after a merger, of airport police. Local 502 became affiliated with AFL-CIO, where it remained for several decades. In 2008, the union’s contract with SEIU was expiring. Instead of reinstating the contract, Local 205, along with Local 3317, became affiliated with the Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM), circa 2009.
