Scope and Content

The papers of Mr. Epstein consist primarily of a number of chapters of a manuscript titled "Labor and the State" by David J. Saposs and represent a substantial portion of that manuscript, published in 1931 under the title, The Labor Movement in Post-War France.

In addition to the Saposs manuscript, the papers include several journal articles by Abraham Epstein.

History

Abraham Epstein was born in Russia on April 20, 1892. He came to the United States in 1910 and became a naturalized citizen in 1917. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1917 and did graduate work the following year. He was interested in workers' education and became first Secretary-Treasurer of the Workers' Education Bureau, which was formed after the 1921 Workers' Education Conference. He subsequently served as lecturer at both Brooklyn College and New York University. He served as Executive Secretary of the American Association of Social Security and was editor of Social Security, the official publication of the American Association for Social Security.

Mr. Epstein was the author of a number of books and numerous journal articles in the fields of aging, social security, and workers' education. He died on May 5, 1942.

Abstract

A lecturer at Brooklyn College and New York University, Abraham Epstein was the first Secretary-Treasurer of the Workers’ Education Bureau and served as Executive Secretary to the American Association of Social Security. A published author, Mr. Epstein wrote on the topics of aging, social security and workers’ education. His papers include several journal articles written by Mr. Epstein and a number of chapters of a manuscript titled “Labor and the State” (published as The Labor Movement in Post-War France) by David J. Saposs.

Acquisition

The papers of Abraham Epstein were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in June 1981 by Wilbur J. Cohen, Professor of Education and Public Welfare Administrations at the University of Michigan, who had obtained them from Mrs. Epstein.
