Abstract
Samuel Krieger was born in Russia on August 20, 1902. Mr. Krieger came to the United States at age two and grew up in New York and New Jersey. He graduated from grammar school and went to work in the aircraft industry. Mr. Krieger was a member and recruiter for the Industrial Workers of the World. He served as an international representative for the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers. In 1953 he began work as an organizer and business agent for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, from which he retired in 1972. He resided in Rohnert Park, California until his death on April 9, 1981. In retirement, Mr. Krieger participated in the Radical Elders Oral History Project and also appeared in two films; The Wobbliest and The Trials of Alger Hiss. In 1978 Mr. Krieger brought suit for libel against the author of Perjury. Allen Weinstein, publisher Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. and New Republic. At the time of his death he was writing his autobiography. Part 1 of the papers of Mr. Krieger mainly concern his activities during his retirement reflecting his lifelong interests in human rights. Part 2 of his papers include the transcript of Sam Krieger's trial by the Machinist's Union, correspondence between Krieger and Sender Garlin, and correspondence between Krieger and Scott and Helen Nearing, famous "back-to-the-landers" who wrote extensively about their experiences. A transcript of Helen Nearing's book, Living and Leaving the Good Life, can be found in the collection. Other topics include Samuel's travels to the Soviet Union, his libel campaign against author Allen Weinstein, and his work with the Teamsters.
