Scope and Content

The Grosse Pointe Civil Rights Organizations collection is made up primarily of the papers of two organizations: The Grosse Pointe Human Relations Council, and the Grosse Pointe Committee For Open Housing.

The papers of the Grosse Pointe Civil Rights Organizations reflect the work of a number of civil rights organizations in the Detroit area in the 1960's and 1970's.

Series 1: This series contains material produced by a number of organizations in the Grosse Pointe, Michigan area concerned with ending racial discrimination through education, legislation, and integration. The primary thrust of their work was in the area of housing.

Subseries A: Grosse Pointe Human Relations Council, 1963-1973: Constitution and by-laws, correspondence, minutes, clippings, and other general organizational information.

Subseries B: Grosse Pointe Committee For Open Housing, 1964-1972: Constitution and by-laws, correspondence, minutes, newsletters, clippings, and other general organizational information.

SubseriesC: Housing Integration Committee, 1965-1972: Constitution and by-laws, correspondence, minutes, and general organizational information.

Subseries D: League of Women Voters, 1966-1972: Correspondence, minutes, press releases, and general organizational information.

Subseries E: Personal Files of Jean Dupuis, 1965-1978: Clippings and pamphlets relating to fair housing, equal oppurtunity, civil rights, the Detroit Riots, and Federal and State legislation.

History

The Grosse Pointe Human Relations Council began informally in 1960 as a result of racial episodes in Detroit housing developments. The council' first public act was a walk through Grosse Pointe in June, 1963 in support of open housing. In 1968 the Council sponsored an appearance by Dr. Martin Luther King, three weeks before he was assassinated. Throughout its existence, the Grosse Pointe Human Relations Council worked toward fair housing, equal employment, and a better nderstanding among the races in the Detroit area. The organization was dissolved in 1973.

The Grosse Pointe Committee For Open Housing began in 1966 as an open housing work group of the Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church. The primary goal of the Committee was to make it possible for any racial or ethnic group to obtain housing in the Grosse Pointe area. This was to be achieved through education, legislation, and real estate services. In 1969 the Grosse Pointe Committee For Open Housing merged with the Grosse Pointe Human Relations Council, becoming a permanent committee of that organization.

The collection is arranged in 1 series that is divided into 5 subseries - Subseries A (Boxes 1-3), Subseries B (Boxes 3-4, Reels 1-6), Subseries C (Boxes 4-5), Subseries D (Box 5), and Subseries E (Boxes 5-7). Files are arranged alphabetically by format.

Acquisition

The papers of the Grosse Pointe Civil Rights Organizations were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in January of 1991 by Mrs. Jean Dupuis, and were opened for research in June of 1991.
