Abstract Layle Lane was a public school teacher in New York City and active in the American Federation of Teachers and the New York Teachers Guild. She was the first African-American vice-president of the New York City AFT local and chaired their Committee for Democratic Human Relations. Her papers relate primarily to civil rights and the role of African-Americans in American society, including copies of two briefs filed by the AFT in Brown vs. Board of Education.

Abstract Milton "Mike" Lapine, a newspaper reporter, was active in forming the Cleveland Plain Dealer unit of the American Newspaper Guild and later served as a member of its International Executive Board. His papers relate to his activities with the Guild, later to be known as The Newspaper Guild.

Abstract An apprentice glass blower at an early age, E.W. Latchem joined the Industrial Workers of the World in 1912. He helped organize the Agricultural Workers Organization in 1915 and much of his union activity centered around Minnesota. His papers reflect his affiliation with the IWW and labor figures such as Vincent St. John.

Abstract Abraham Lefkowitz was a teacher and principal in the New York elementary school system and active in teachers unions, civic and social reform movements, and championed minority causes and civil liberties. He was one of the founders of the American Federation of Teachers, serving as Vice-President for fourteen years. His papers reflect his professional and social contributions made during his years in the New York public school system, particularly his fight against communists in the AFT.

Abstract An active union member and labor education advocate, Harry Lester was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Firemen and Engineers, served as president of United Steel Workers (USW) Local 2659 and on the International Staff of USW District 29. Mr. Lester’s papers document his campaign for the position of USW District 29 Director.
