Hilberry began in 1930 at Wayne as an instructor in the English Department. In 1939, he became head of the English Department. In 1945, he was appointed Dean of Administration of the University, serving in that position until he was appointed to university president.

The Detroit Newspaper Strike started July 13, 1995 by the Metropolitan Council of Newspaper Unions and roughly 2,500 workers against the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press.
