Wayne University College of Liberal Arts, Office of the Dean: Albertus Darnell Records

Abstract Albertus Darnell came to Detroit to teach mathematics at Central High School. In 1902 he became head of the Math Department. In 1917 when the Detroit Junior College was organized, Darnell was named head of the mathematics department, continuing until 1924. When the College of the City of Detroit was established in 1923, Darnell became Assistant Dean. After Dean David D. Mackenzie passed away on July 16, 1926, Darnell was appointed Acting Dean. It was the hope of the university that endowment funds would play a large role in providing the necessary financial stability for Wayne to establish itself as a notable academic institution. Abstract he Janet Mackenzie Memorial Fund, a non-profit corporation, was created in March 1929. In 1931 its name was changed to Mackenzie Union of the College of the City of Detroit; 1934 it became Mackenzie Union of Wayne University. Wayne University Medical Science Center Records

Abstract The Medical Science Center was organized as a nonprofit corporation at the request of the Detroit Board of Education. Its mission was to raise money for, and build one of the world's outstanding medical centers in Detroit, affiliated with Wayne University. Capital costs were to be borne by foundation support and private donations, but unsuccessful in this endeavor, the Center was finally dissolved in 1951.

Abstract Warren E. Bow (1891-1945) served as superintendent of the Detroit Public Schools and president of Wayne University from July, 1942 until his death on May 12, 1945. After service on the Mexican border in 1916 and in France during World War I, Bow returned to Detroit in 1919 to become a grade principal at Nordstrum High School. Bow became assistant dean of the Detroit Teachers College, the predecessor of Wayne's College of Education, in 1922. He served as its Dean from 1926 to 1930. ...
